How to prepare your job application

Once you find a job you're interested in, it's time to apply.

The application process can vary depending on the job, but the advertisement should generally provide specific instructions on what is required. This can range from completing an online application, emailing your application or phoning someone to register your interest.

Make sure you read and follow job advert instructions carefully so that your application is accepted. For example, if the job advert specifies a deadline, late applications will not be accepted.

To read the different ways of applying for jobs visit 'Applying for a Job' section on the Jobs and Skills WA website(Opens in a new tab/window)

If you are looking to apply from overseas, it is important to check the visa requirements and start this process before applying. To find out more about working in Western Australia visit Migration WA(Opens in a new tab/window)

Alternatively, the free Skilled Migrant Employment Register(Opens in a new tab/window), can promote your interest and skills to WA employers considering migrant sponsorship.

Submitting your application

Once your application is ready, re-read the job advert and follow the instructions to submit. Once you have submitted your application, wait to be contacted for an interview.

Prepare for the interview

Job interviews are the opportunity for you to showcase your professional experience and skills, but also who you are as an individual.

Being prompt, well-prepared, and polite are good ways to demonstrate your interest and potential as a great employee.

There are a few things to remember when preparing for the interview:

  • Pay attention to any instructions or information requests for the interview and come prepared with this information
  • Research the position and organisation you are applying for
  • Review the job ad and your application so you can confidently talk to that in person. Sometimes bringing a printout to refer to can be helpful.
  • Interviews don't need to be scary; with proper preparation, you'll do great!
